"Seriously, is it good for men and women and children to swarm together in cities and stay there, keep staying there, till their instincts are so far perverted that they lose all taste for their natural element, the wide world out-of-doors?"

The Photographer

A native of Western North Carolina, George S. Dixon lives in Waynesville, NC, in the midst of the Great Smoky Mountains. He holds degrees from the University of Georgia and is now retired from a career as a professor and researcher at institutions in Tennessee, Oklahoma and North Carolina.

For more than 40 years Dixon has worked to document photographically the fragile and changing environment of the Southern Appalachian region. The images in this site are part of the result of this effort.

Organization of the Gallery

The images in the gallery record the dance of light through nature and mountain life, from the Great Smoky Mountains and surrounding Carolinas, Tennessee, and Georgia. Images from the Smokies are divided into wildflowers, landscapes, waterfalls, panoramas and mountain life. Additional image3s from other parts of the world are found in the section titles "From Off".

Artist's Statement

I hope to convey to the viewer some small part of the awe and wonder the Smokies region has always aroused in me. The mountains are places of constant change and renewal. No two days or even moments are ever quite the same. It is this constant stirring and reawakening that I seek to capture in my images.

And it also gives me a great excuse to stop and catch my breath while hiking!

Each image in this presentation is available as a limited-edition, fine quality digital print with archival dyes on heavy-weight matte paper. Accelerated aging tests indicate a lifetime without noticeable fading of 100 years or more when displayed under glass. Each exposure and print and their presentation is the personal work of the photographer ensuring the the final quality of the images meets his exacting standards for excellence.
